Two-time Olympian Vinesh Phogat announced on Tuesday that she is returning her Khel Ratna and Arjuna awards. Double world champion gold medallist made her decision public on social media platform X (earlier Twitter).
Why does she return the award?
Vinesh Phogat wrote,”I am returning my Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award. Many thanks to the powerful who have put me in this situation.”
Four days after bronze medallist Bajrang Punia returned his Padma Shri, Phogat made her announcement.
Earlier the wrestlers protested against the mi’s happenings in the federation, they also accused Brij Bhushan Singh of assault against wrestlers, and they demanded his arrest.
Vignesh is protesting against Brij Bhushan’s sigh and is disappointed with the condition of the current system and how female players are neglected she expressed her grief over how female medallists get attention after winning medals and no one concerned about their genuine problem.
Earlier Bronze medallist Sakshi Malik from the Rio Games announced her retirement on December 21, just hours after Sanjay Singh’s panel, backed by former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, topped the WFI voting.
Under the pressure and criticism from the protesting wrestlers, WFI was suspended by the sports ministry on Sunday, with various violations of the National Sports Code and the federation constitution as well as “blatant disregard for legal and procedural norms” being cited.
To supervise the federation, the ministry instructed the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to establish an ad hoc committee. IOA has not yet made the new committee public; before the elections, the organization was governed by an ad hoc panel.
Wrestlers don’t seem to be fully satisfied by the decision of suspension of WFI, their demand is very clear that they want action against Brij Bhushan and by returning Khel Ratna Vinesh Phogat has made it very clear that they want action against Brij Bhushan.
In future, we will see what the outcome of this protest is, and how long wrestlers have to wait for justice. But their spirits are high, and they seem to be sure that they will not settle for less, their only demand is to take action against Brij Bhushan Singh.
