United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), was formally disbanded on 24 January after 44 years of its formation. This group of armed insurgents decided to hand over its weapons to the government this month.
ULFA was an armed insurgents group formed in 1979 with an aim of creating sovereign Assam. This organization continued to create violence against the government. So the Union government banned this system in 1990. Since then the union government has been in talks with the ULFA organization for 12 years to disband their organization.
End to violence
As a result of this unconditional talk, the ULFA signed Memorandum of settlements with the government on 29 December 2023. They agreed to disband ULFA and join the national mainstream by giving up the motto of Sovereign Assam.
This decision was taken in the last general meeting of ULFA held in Sipajhar city and the peace agreement was signed. After this Anup Sethia, the General Secretary of ULFA said that the decision of dissolving the organization was approved by 900 members from 9 camps of ULFA in Central Assam. He also demanded the government to provide the land to their members for agriculture. The weapons in the camps will be formally handed over to the government by this month.
Also they decided to form a new social organization called Assam Vikash Mancha which will be a common platform to work on development projects and achieve self-sufficiency.
ULFA Independent
Early in 2011, the ULFA split into two groups. Now the group led by Arabinda Rajgova only gives up violence. The other group led by Paresh Baruah did not agree with the Union government and decided to operate under the name ‘ULFA-Independent’.
