Sunil Lahri, widely recognized for his portrayal of Laxman in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan, has stirred controversy with his recent remarks on the Ayodhya electorate following the BJP’s defeat in the Lok Sabha elections. Expressing disappointment over the outcome, Lahri accused the people of Ayodhya of betraying their king by not voting for the BJP, the party responsible for inaugurating the Ram Mandir earlier this year.
In the wake of the announcement of the Lok Sabha election results on June 4, it became evident that BJP candidate Lallu Singh had lost the Faizabad constituency, home to the newly constructed Ram temple, to the Samajwadi Party’s Awadhesh Prasad. Sunil Lahri, taking to his Instagram stories, did not mince words as he criticized the voters of Ayodhya, labeling them as “selfish” and accusing them of historical betrayal.
Sunil Lahri Expresses His Criticism on Instagram
Sunil Lahri posted an Instagram story that reads, “We are forgetting that these are the same Ayodhya citizens who doubted Goddess Sita after she returned from exile. What do you call the person who even denies God? Selfish. History stands proof that the citizens of Ayodhya always betrayed their king. Shame on them.”
In subsequent Instagram posts, Sunil Lahri continued to express his frustration, highlighting the perceived ingratitude of the Ayodhya electorate. Another statement attributed to Lahri reads, “We salute your greatness dear citizens of Ayodhya, you are the ones who didn’t spare even Goddess Sita. We are not shocked that you betrayed the man who made sure that Lord Ram came out of that small tent and was installed in a beautiful temple. The entire nation will never see you with respect again.”
Drawing a parallel to the character Katappa from the film Baahubali, Sunil Lahri emphasized the depth of his disappointment by likening the actions of the Ayodhya citizens to betrayal, echoing sentiments expressed in the epic saga.
Sunil Lahri’s association with the iconic character of Laxman in Ramayan has earned him widespread recognition and admiration among Indian audiences. His portrayal of the loyal and valiant younger brother of Lord Ram has cemented his place in the history of Indian television.
Amidst his criticism of the Ayodhya electorate, Sunil Lahri extended congratulations to his Ramayan co-star Arun Govil, who emerged victorious in the Meerut Lok Sabha constituency. In a video message, Lahri conveyed his happiness over Govil’s win, along with actress Kangana Ranaut’s success in the Mandi constituency.
In his video message, Sunil Lahri stated, “Jai Shri Ram. I was very disappointed to see the election results. That’s why I used to say, vote, vote, but no one listened. Now, the Gathbandhan government will be formed. Will this Gathbandhan government be able to run smoothly for 5 years? Think about it. Anyway, I am happy that two people, whom I like a lot, won both the elections. One, Kangana Ranaut ji, who is the embodiment of female empowerment, won the election from Mandi. And second, my elder brother, Arun Govil ji, won the election from Meerut. I would like to congratulate both of them. Jai Shri Ram.”
With BJP’s loss in Faizabad constituency, where the revered Ram Mandir stands, Lahri’s expression of disappointment resonates deeply, reflecting the sentiments of many who perceive the electoral verdict through the lens of religious identity and historical narratives.
