The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has shared information with the United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) about the March 2023 attack on the Indian Consulate in San Francisco. They want to make sure that the people responsible for the attack are quickly prosecuted.
What is the matter?
On July 2, 2023, India’s consulate in San Francisco came under an attack from Khalistan supporters who tried to set the diplomatic facility on fire, following the killing of separatist Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) chief Hardeep Singh Najjar in Canada.
Earlier, on March 19, 2023, a group of pro-Khalistan protesters attacked and damaged the Indian Consulate in San Francisco. Raising pro-Khalistan slogans, protesters broke open the makeshift security barriers raised by the San Francisco police and installed two Khalistani flags inside the Consulate premises, damaging the building, assaulting and injuring some consulate officials.
FBI is aggressively investigating
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is “aggressively” investigating the attacks on the Indian Consulate in San Francisco on March 19 and July 2 this year, chief of premier US agency – Christopher Wray told the director general of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Dinkar Gupta, during a high-level meeting in Delhi in December. The FBI chief visited the country to meet top security and intelligence officials for discussions on strengthening cooperation, sharing information, cybercrimes, extraditions etc.
How is NIA gathering information?
The pro-Khalistani movement has been notably active in the past year. Initially, the London High Commission was investigated, and the NIA identified 14 to 15 individuals.
Now, the NIA is urging the public for additional information regarding the Indian consulate attack in San Francisco. The NIA has released images of 10 wanted suspects and is seeking more details as conducting an independent investigation is challenging for them. The NIA is seeking assistance from the local public to identify these individuals.
A team of NIA had visited San Francisco in August to collect evidence including the CCTV footage and exchange information regarding the attacks with local law enforcement agencies there.
