Canada limits students visas for 2 years – Indians may suffer

The government of Canada set a limit for student’s visas for two years. Due to this, there is a possibility that Indian students will be affected.

Immigration Minister Mark Miller addressed the press yesterday and said that this step has been taken to reduce the number of people who are coming to Canada for studies. Reports said that more than 8 lakh education visas were issued in 2022 and in 2023 almost 5.60 lakh student visas were issued which is three times more than the number Canada accepted 10 years ago.

Also the people face a huge problem in finding housing to stay in Canada because the number of students coming to Canada continues to rise. The country’s news agency CBC reported that the provinces are facing various challenges because there are not enough houses for people coming to Canada from abroad.

Hundreds of educational institutions that do not have enough basic structures to enroll foreign students in their educational institutions. They make false promises that if they join their educational institutions, they will get employment in Canada immediately and become permanent Canadian residents.

Decision to reduce the visa

Therefore the Canadian government decided to reduce the student visas by 35 percent in the upcoming year compared to last year. Hence the number will be reduced to nearly 3.64 lakh student visas. The Canadian government explained that this decision of setting a limit for students’ visas has been taken to control these challenges and the decision is not against any international student.

Jenny Kwan, president of the New Democratic party who are now the opposition party of Canada commented this as mismanagement of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and It’s like punishing students who want to build a better future.

India is one of the top 10 countries who get educational visas from the Canadian government. Therefore Indian students are likely to be affected more due to this announcement. In the future many people who want to study in Canada will face problems in getting a visa.
