The 47th Chennai book fair concluded yesterday. It is said that a total of 15 lakh readers have visited, and books worth Rs.18 crore have been sold.
Every year the Booksellers and Publishers Association of South India (BAPASI) organizes a grand book fair in Chennai in the month of January. This year also, they organised such book fest which was the 47th book fair that happened in Chennai.
This 19 day book fair started on January 3 at the YMCA ground in Nandanam, Chennai and ended yesterday 21 January. It was inaugurated by TamilNadu Sports Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin along with the state Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poiyamozhi and Health Minister Ma. Subramanian.
Many Authors, Poets and other scholars also attend the fair for various events organized as a part of this book fair. There were 900 stalls featuring a large number of unique books. BAPASI officially announced that nearly 15 lakh readers visited this year, out of them 2 lakh readers are children. Books worth Rs. 18 crore were sold in this book fair.
Special stalls
Special stalls arranged by TN police in which people can donate books and those donated books will be given to prison inmates. This initiative by the Police department will help many prisoners to read books which may pave the way for them to get a better life. Also many special stalls which provide exclusive books for children attracted many kids.
Book fair concluded
On the last day, many people rushed to get the book they wanted. High Court Judge Aranga Mahadevan attended the closing ceremony as a special guest and honoured the publishers. He honored Kadalangudi Publishing House for completing 100 years of publishing and MRM Abdulrahim’s Universal Publishers for completing 100 years of publishing. He also honoured 10 publishing houses that completed 50 years of continuous publishing and 22 publishing houses that completed 25 years of publishing.
BAPASI President Sethu Sokkalingam, Secretary SK Murugan, Doctor Arunthamij Yazhini, businessman VG Santosham and others participated in the closing event.
