A giant tidal wave swallowed the coastal areas of southern Asia, particularly Indonesia, India Srilanka and Thailand on this day of 2004. It’s been 19 years since the natural disaster happened and people pay their tribute to the victims by remembering them.
About the unfortunate Day
On 26 December 2004, Since it was the next day of Christmas, many civilians gathered on beaches to enjoy their vacation and fishermen went to sea for fishing. At that time the Indian ocean experienced a powerful undersea earthquake of 9.1 magnitude which resulted in the formation of a 100 -foot-high killer wave named Tsunami. The earthquake which triggered the Tsunami happened in the Indian Ocean near the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. The waves literally swallowed the coastal areas of Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Pondicherry. Many children lost their parents, many parents lost their children which made the entire country to mourn.
According to the Tsunami impact report of the Ministry of Home Affairs, India says nearly 8000 people of Tamil Nadu died in the Tsunami and the death count is 10,000 when it comes to India. It is the deadliest record in history. Also the places like Indonesia, Andaman Nicobar Island were whipped away by giant Tsunami waves.
The government later launched the series of relief camps, permanent shelters and all sorts of relief packages including food grains, clothes, textbooks etc., for the victims. It also helped the fishermen to reconstruct their livelihood by assistance to replace their nets, catamarans, vallams and boats. Many NGOs also joined hands with the government in recovering the livelihood of the people.
Today marking the 19th anniversary of the Tsunami, people pay their homage to the Tsunami victims of various places.
