Russia declared Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas a wanted” individual in connection with an undisclosed criminal case.
On Tuesday, a Russian spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, announced that Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas and two other high-ranking officials from the Baltic region are now wanted by Russia. This happened at the same time as Estonia released a report from its intelligence agency, warning that Russia is getting ready to start a war against Western countries in the next ten years.
Kallas dared to challenge Russia
Since 2021, Kaja Kallas has been leading Estonia. She has been a staunch advocate for Ukraine, actively pushing for increased military aid to Kyiv and stricter sanctions against Russia.
Kallas, along with Estonian State Secretary Taimar Peterkop and Lithuanian Culture Minister Simonas Kairys, have been included in the interior ministry’s database for their alleged involvement in the “destruction” of monuments dedicated to Soviet soldiers. This marks the first instance of Russia placing the name of a foreign leader on a wanted list.
Since gaining independence following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have removed numerous Soviet-era memorials. This ongoing process, which initially strained relations with Moscow, has intensified notably since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Estonia vs Russia
After gaining independence when the Soviet Union broke up in 1991, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have taken down many memorials from the Soviet era. This has caused tension with Moscow, and it has become even more of an issue since Russia invaded Ukraine.
Since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, Estonia and the other Baltic States have raised their military spending to more than 2 percent of their gross domestic product. Additionally, NATO allies have increased their presence in these countries.
