“As it is said, ‘It takes no compromise to give people their rights.’ Greece is planning to legalize same-sex marriage, provided it is accepted by the majority. The reform could prove challenging for Mitsotakis, who also faces opposition to the legislation within his party and cabinet. The bill will allow child adoption but not surrogate parenthood.”
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has said that the bill is aimed at eliminating discrimination against sexual orientation. By breaking the image of the Traditional conservative leader Prime Minister has drafted national strategy on LGBTQ Plus rights.
The LGBTQ+ Community has struggled long for its rights
Greek is a Christian majority country, where orthodox Church have influence on the society and lawmakers, and they opposed equal rights for LGBTQ+ community.
Over the years Greece has implemented a series of reforms to improve the lives of LGBTQ community, which had long been side lined since long time due to prevailing orthodox beliefs in the society. The community has been struggling for the same rights enjoyed by other citizens of Greece for a considerable amount of time. time.
If this bill passes, Greece will be one of the few countries where same-sex marriage is legal.
Challenges Ahead for same-sex couple
The Prime Minister emphasized that the proposed law will not extend the right of future parenthood through surrogate mothers to same-sex couples. However, it will acknowledge the status of existing offspring and also include those who have been adopted.
As the government announced plans for the legislation, the head of the Greek Transgender Association pointed out that many questions remain unanswered. One of them is when the Prime Minister mentioned equality in marriage, he only referred to sexual orientation and only for same-sex couples. I wonder if they will include transgender people as well. So, their concern is also valid.
This reform is revolutionary, as everyone deserves the same rights. No one should be discriminated against based on their gender.
