What is One nation, One election?
This one nation one election is nothing but a simultaneous election of the Lok Sabha and state legislatures. In doing so the public was supposed to cast two votes simultaneously. It is said that this system of election will reduce the cost spent for elections to the government.
Difference of opinions
But there was lots of difference of opinions seen among people and opposition parties throughout the country. The opposition stated that this will suppress the voice of the state governments and their needs. So the Election Commission now open the forum for everyone to file their suggestion on this.
The BJP government has been insisting on this ‘one country, one election’ system since 2014. The Election Commission of India has decided to hold assembly elections for some states together with the Lok Sabha elections to be held in 2024.
Pannel headed by Former President
A committee has been set up to look into one nation and one election. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Congress Lok Sabha Speaker Adhir Ranjan are members of the high-level committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind.
Amit Shah, Congress Lok Sabha Speaker Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary, former Rajya Sabha Speaker Ghulam Nabi Azad, 15th Finance Committee Chairman N.K. Singh, former Lok Sabha general secretary Subhash Kashyap, senior advocate Harish Salve and former Central Anti-Corruption Bureau chief Sanjay Kothari have also been appointed. But the Congress Lok Sabha Speaker Adhir Ranjan declined to be a member of the committee.
Even if the one nation one election is not currently possible, it is predicted that it will be fully implemented in the next 10 or 15 years.
Previously the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections were held together in 1967 after that both the elections were held separately because some state assemblies were dissolved for various reasons.
