A case has been registered against actress Nayanthara for her recent Tamil film ‘Annapoorani’. Hindu activists accused that the film ‘Annapoorani’ insulted Lord Rama and hurt religious sentiments of Hindus. So they filed an FIR against the crew of the movie, which leads to the removal of the film from leading OTT platorm Netflix.
‘Annapoorani’ is the movie directed by director Nilesh Krishnaa in which actress Nayanthara played the role of an aspiring young woman who wants to become a chef despite of her orthodox Brahmin family.
Scenes that agitated Hindu-activists
Some scenes and lines in the movie showed that the Brahmin girl cooked and tasted meat and a few verses like ‘Lord Rama ate meat in Valmiki’s Ramayana’ are placed in the film. Some Hindu activists get offended by this and claim that it hurts their religious sentiment.
Accordingly, Hindu activist Ramesh Solanki lodged a complaint in Mumbai for which a case has been filed against 7 people from the crew of the movie including actress Nayanthara, Co-star Jai, director Nilesh Krishna, producers Jatin Sethi and R Ravindran, Monica Shergill Content Head of Netflix India.
Re-release of the film
Actress Nayanthara’s 75th movie ‘Annapoorani’ released on 1 December 2023 and received mixed reviews from audiences but after its digital premier on 29 December, the film created more heated debate. On the other hand, fans raised their voices in support of Nayanthara asking how they can ban a movie that has already been censored.
It is expected that ‘Annapoorani’ will be re-released in OTT after the controversial scenes and dialogues are removed or changed. Meanwhile, the producers apologize in the Social Media if the movie hurt anyone’s sentiments.
