Renowned filmmaker Karan Johar has officially announced the sequel to his 2018 hit film “Dhadak.” Titled “Dhadak 2,” the new movie will feature Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri in lead roles and is slated for release on November 22, 2024. The film will be directed by Shazia Iqbal and produced by Dharma Productions, Cloud 9 Pictures, and Zee Studios.
Johar took to Instagram on May 27, 2024, to share the exciting news, posting a motion poster of the upcoming film. In his caption, Johar wrote, “This story is a little different because there was a king, there was a queen – the caste was different…end story. Presenting Dhadak 2 starring Siddhant Chaturvedi & Triptii Dimri. Directed by Shazia Iqbal. #Dhadak2 in cinemas 22nd November 2024.”
The Legacy of Dhadak
The original “Dhadak,” released in 2018, was a romantic drama that marked the Bollywood debut of Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter. Directed by Shashank Khaitan, the film was an adaptation of the critically acclaimed Marathi movie “Sairat,” directed by Nagraj Manjule. “Dhadak” explored themes of love and social inequality, garnering commercial success and a strong fan base.
“Dhadak 2” promises to delve deeper into the complexities of love across social barriers. From the teaser video, it appears the story will focus on the love story between two individuals from different castes and the societal challenges they face. The motion poster shared by Johar and the lead actors features a poignant voiceover exchange between the characters. Siddhant’s character says, “Jo sapna tum dekh rahi ho Vidhi usme mere liye koi jagah nahi hai (The dream that you have Vidhi, there is no place for me in it).” Triptii’s character responds, “Toh phir yeh bhi bata do Neelesh ki in feelings ka kya karun (Then let me know Neelesh, what should I do with my feelings)?”
Siddhant Chaturvedi, who gained fame with his role in “Gully Boy,” has continued to impress with performances in films like “Gehraiyaan” and “Kho Gaye Hum Kahan.” Triptii Dimri, known for her powerful roles in films like “Bulbbul”, is also set to appear in the highly anticipated Aashiqui 3 opposite Kartik aAryan and “Pushpa 2: The Rule” alongside Allu Arjun.
On social media, Chaturvedi shared the motion poster, captioning it, “Ek raja, ek rani, ek kahaani, do dhadkane (One king, one queen, one story–two heartbeats).” He emphasized that the film explores “barriers of class and status stitched in the minds of societies, underscoring a narrative of love that can never be fulfilled. Or can it?”
The announcement of “Dhadak 2” comes after a period of speculation and denial. In 2023, Johar had refuted claims that a sequel was in the works. Addressing these rumors on Instagram Stories, he stated, “To put this on the record and for all concerned, we (Dharma Productions) are NOT making a film with the title DHADAK 2 as is being reported in various articles…” However, the recent official announcement has now confirmed the sequel, much to the excitement of fans.
Besides “Dhadak 2,” Triptii Dimri is set to star in “Bad Newz” alongside Vicky Kaushal and Ammy Virk, which is directed by Anand Tiwari and produced by Johar, scheduled for release on July 19, 2024. Siddhant Chaturvedi, on the other hand, is shooting for his next ‘Yudhra’ opposite Malavika Mohanan produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani.
