What was Hukumchand Mill Case?
Hukumchand Mill was a textile mill located in Indore from 1923. The operation of the mill continued till 1992 after that the mill was closed due to various reasons including the non payment of salaries and other liabilities to the employees. Over 5000 employees were affected by the shutdown of the mill without proper notice.
Now, after a long legal battle of the employees, the state housing & infrastructure development board and labor union made an agreement and the due amount including gratuity and other liabilities was deposited in the high court on December 20. On December 25, the birth anniversary of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee which is celebrated as good governance day, PM Modi handed over the cheque worth Rs 224 crore to the official liquidator and heads of the mill’s labour union. PM added in his speech that,”People of Indore remember December 25 as the day the workers got justice and I bow before your patience and salute your hard work”.
