After the death of a young farmer on 21 February, the farmers unions announced that they will hold their march towards Delhi for two days. The protesters marched towards Delhi demanding minimum support price for the crops.
Delhi Chalo suspended for 2 days
Punjab Kisan Mastur Shankarsh Committee President Sarwan Singh Bandar said in an interview on 22 February that the farmers have decided to suspend the Delhi Chalo protest for two days considering the prevailing situation in Shambu border of Haryana district. The central government’s actions of using paramilitary forces on the border of Haryana to stop the farmers deserve strong condemnation.
The protesters already assured that their Delhi Chalo rally will be conducted in a peaceful manner. If the situation becomes worse the leaders of the farmers organisation will continue the rally towards Delhi and the youngsters should hold the protest.
Talks between farmers and Ministers
Meanwhile a series of talks happened between the farmers organisation and the Union Ministers but in vain.
During the 4th round of talks, the Union government proposed to give a five year contract of guarantee price on certain crops including maize, grain, legumes and cotton but the farmers rejected the proposal and resumed their protest. So the government imposed paramilitary forces, tear gas to control the protestors.
Clash between protesters and paramilitary forces
A 21 year-old young protester identified as Subhakaran Singh died after being hit by a bullet in the clash between farmers and police forces at Shambhu border and many found severely injured.
Following this, the farmers decided to suspend the Delhi Chalo protest for two days. They said that the protest will take place in Haryana and the further move towards Delhi will be decided after analysing the situation. Because many painful incidents have happened in the protest.
But the farmers were strong in their demands that legalisation of the minimum support price for agricultural produce is very important. The farmers association also added that all the states like Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, South India should unite and raise their voice against the Modi government.
