The world famous Alanganallur jallikattu started today (Jan.17) morning as Tamil Nadu Youth Welfare and Sports Minister Udayanidhi Stalin waved the flag and started the bull taming sport.
As the Pongal festival started in Tamil Nadu, people started celebrating the cultural sport jallikattu in Madurai. Avaniyapuram, Palamedu jallikattu in Madurai district was completed on January 15th and 16th respectively. The world famous Alanganallur jallikattu started today at 7 am with a pledge. The tamers take the pledge by continuing the District Collector Sangeetha who reads the pledge. Tamil Nadu Youth Welfare and Sports Minister Udayanidhi Stalin inaugurated the event by waving the flag.
Prize shower in jallikattu
1200 bulls and 800 tamers have been selected to participate in the Alanganallur Jallikattu. The match is expected to last 10 rounds till evening. 50 players will compete in each round. The player who tamed the most number of bulls will qualify for the next round. A car worth Rs 8 lakh and a bike worth Rs 1.5 lakh are awarded on behalf of Tamil Nadu Youth Welfare and Sports Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin to the tamers who tame the most number of bulls in the final round. The owner of the best performing bull in the field is gifted a car worth Rs 8 lakh and a bike on behalf of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin.
Minister Udayanidhi Stalin is awarding gold coins and gold rings in which Chief Minister Stalin and Udhayanidhi Stalin’s portrait were engraved are presented to tamers and cow owners who win each round. Actors Arun Vijay, Suri, director A.L.Vijay were present to watch the jallikattu. Also the owners of the bulls and tamers who win the competitions are given various prizes including gold coin, bicycle, bureau, mattress, brass utensils etc.
Medical Camp
Special medical treatment camps have been set up by the Health Department and Animal Husbandry Department for injured cowherds and bulls. Ambulances are ready to take them for further treatment. Volunteers of the Indian Red Cross have been deployed to rescue injured soldiers and bulls. More than 2000 policemen are engaged in security work across Alanganallur.
