On Wednesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared that the state police would arrest Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after the Lok Sabha elections. This statement came a day after an FIR was filed against Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders by Guwahati police, following a confrontation during the Bharat Jodo Nyaya Yatra.
Why the FIR against Gandhi?
Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra has seen trouble and disruption as it enters Assam which is ruled by Hemant Biswa Sarma. On the sixth day of the Assam leg of the ongoing yatra, Tuesday witnessed heightened tensions marked by confrontations between the participants and state authorities.
Despite being denied permission to enter Guwahati city as planned, the yatra faced barriers in the form of barricades and a police presence at the road leading from the highway. In a determined move, participants forcefully broke through the obstruction, only to be met with resistance from security personnel who pushed them back. Ultimately, the yatra persisted along the highway, bypassing entry into the city.
Subsequently, on the same day, law enforcement authorities took action by registering a suo motu First Information Report (FIR). The FIR was filed under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) related to criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, rioting, obstruction of public pathways, assault or criminal force intended to deter a public servant from discharging duty, causing harm to a public servant, and damage to property.
On Wednesday, the Congress continued its journey in Barpeta and Dhubri districts in Lower Assam. Rahul, speaking in Barpeta, boldly stated, “Go ahead, file as many cases as you want against me. The BJP-RSS cannot scare me.”
Ugly War of words between Rahul and Biswa
Ever since Rahul Gandhi entered Assam for the yatra, a war of words has ensued between the Assam Chief Minister and him.
Once considered very close to Rahul Gandhi when he was in Congress, Biswa is now at the center of controversy, with Rahul stating, “Biswa is the most corrupt Chief Minister of the nation, and he is being controlled by Amit Shah.”
Following the attack, Biswa issued a threat to Rahul, stating, “I will arrest him after the election, and a committee will be formed to probe the case.” The situation is escalating into a more personal conflict between them.
