So the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has urged the press and media to avoid news that could cause social tension. A notification issued by them in this regard mentioned that Ayodhya Ram Temple Prana Pratishtha Festival will be celebrated across the country On January 22. In view of this, some unverified, provocative and fake news that disrupts social harmony and public order is likely to be spread in the media, especially on social media.
Newspapers, private TV channels and current affairs broadcasters are advised to refrain from posting false, religious harmony and disturbing news to the public. Social media companies are advised to take steps to ensure that the above-mentioned types of news are not published.
Acts regulating Media
The Cable TV Networks Regulation Act clarifies the programming rules for television stations. Similarly, the Press Council of India has laid down disciplinary rules for the press under the Press Council Act. In addition, IT Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics rules are in place for social media.
