Banwarilal Purohit has resigned from his posts as Punjab Governor and Chandigarh administrator. Banwarilal Purohit has said in his resignation letter that, he is resigning from the posts due to personal reasons and some other commitments.
Banwarilal Purohit was appointed as the Governor of Punjab State and Administrator of Union Territory of Chandigarh in 2021. He announced his resignation from the post after serving as the Governor for more than two and a half years. In this regard, in his resignation letter written to President Drabupati Murmu, he said, “I tender my resignation from the post of Punjab Governor and administrator of the Union Teritory Chandigarh for my personal reasons and some other commitments, and please accept it.”

This issue went to the Supreme Court on November 10, 2023 as he was delaying the approval of nearly five bills passed by the Punjab Assembly. In this regard a bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and comprising Justices JP Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra warned him and commented that “You are playing with fire”.

Earlier, Banwarilal Purohit served as a Governor of Assam from 2016-2017 and as Governor of Tamil Nadu from 2017-2021. During that time he faced lots of criticism from the state parties that he was interfering in the Governance amid his powers. Banwarilal Purohit was also elected as Lok Sabha MP from Nagpur constituency of Maharashtra twice for Congress and once for BJP.
