Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar, has resigned from the RJD alliance, and there is a high possibility that he is going to form a government with the BJP. Political tension is high in Bihar, marking the fourth time Nitish has switched sides from RJD to BJP.
Opportunist Nitish Kumar is now popular as ‘Paltu Chacha’
Nitish Kumar is now popular among Biharis as ‘Paltu Chacha’ due to his tendency to switch sides. People say that Nitish is an opportunist; wherever the majority of people are, there is Nitish Kumar.
This isn’t the first time Nitish Kumar has switched alliances. Initially, he was with the BJP and served as the Chief Minister of Bihar. Then, he distanced himself from the NDA alliance and formed a government with his former rival Lalu Yadav’s party, the RJD. His political strategy was largely built on opposing Lalu Yadav.
Nitish Kumar first became Chief Minister in 2005 in collab oration with the BJP. The split with the BJP started in 2013 when he ended the 17-year alliance with them. His dissatisfaction stemmed from the BJP naming Narendra Modi as the prime ministerial candidate. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Nitish Kumar contested independently and only secured two seats, a significant drop from the 18 seats they had in the 2009 polls.
After that, he formed a government with the BJP and joined the NDA alliance. Taking responsibility for his party’s poor performance in the 2014 polls, Kumar resigned as the Chief Minister of Bihar and appointed Jiten Ram Manjhi as his successor.
During the floor test, he managed to survive with the support of Lalu Prasad Yadav’s RJD, once his fierce rival. In the 2015 assembly polls, the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ (grand alliance) achieved a sweeping victory, and Kumar reclaimed the position of Chief Minister. However, his dissatisfaction grew again. This time, he was unhappy that his party emerged as a smaller force in a larger coalition, with the RJD holding the majority mandate from the people.
After that, Nitish Kumar once again switched sides, this time from the BJP to the RJD. The JDU accused the BJP of trying to break their party and, as a result, cut ties with them. With the support of the RJD, Nitish’s party gained a majority in the assembly, and since then, he has been holding onto the position of Chief Minister.
Political Crisis: The choice of the people holds no value for politicians.
Honesty seems to be lacking in politics, and the days when morality played a significant role are long gone. Nowadays, every political party appears to prioritize power over the preferences of the people.
Bihar is facing political turmoil, and it exemplifies how politicians manipulate democracy to suit their needs, with little regard for the people and their mandates.
Nitish once stated that he would prefer death over aligning with the BJP. Amit Shah of the BJP, on the other hand, once declared that his party would never welcome Nitish. In the pursuit of power, nothing else seems to matter to these politicians. One thing is certain: everything is a priority for politicians except for the choice of the people.
