Ammonia gas leak in Ennore Chennai at 11:45 pm on December 26 from the Fertilizer manufacturing facility of Coromandel International Limited. Local people complained of uneasiness, suffocation, and vomiting following the leak of ammonia gas. Many people are affected by it. Chennai is still dealing with the oil slick caused by cyclone Michaung, and this Ammonia leak caused serious damage to the city.

December has been not good for Chennai; it is dealing with back-to-back disasters. Earlier On December 4, during and after the after-effects of Cyclone Michaung, oil from CPCL began leaking into Kosasthalaiyar River in Chennai via Buckingham Canal and storm drain. The fisherman had to bear a heavy cost as oil reached the Ennore estuary, a crucial fishing ground for fishing. Oil also entered the Bay of Bengal and harmed it.
Because of cyclones, people have to suffer a lot. Chennai was damaged economically because of the cycle, then this oil spill caused double the damage. Huge damage and distractions ca. be used to the city. People and the environment are affected by it.
This is not the end of the story; the city has to face a lot now on December 26 Ammonia gas leaked which caused panic and distress among people. People panicked and fled their homes as soon as they learned about the gas leak. They gathered on the roadways and asked for help. PTI was informed by sources that the fertilizer unit personnel “took steps” to resolve the technical issue.

Once a vibrant city Chennai now bears the scars of continuous and heavy distractions. Authority should take proper measures to stop further leaks of gas and make plans and work effectively to stop such happenings in future.

The government should focus on rebuilding and pay proper compensation to the victims of these disasters. This will be not easy for them but those who lost their livelihood and bear lose the government’s responsibility to compensate them.
