Myanmar’s Junta declared that all young men and women must join the military for at least two years.
This is slated to be reason behing Junta having trouble in controlling rebel groups who want more freedom in different areas of the country after the Myanmar’s Feb 2 military coup.
The junta’s spokesperson stated that a national military system involving all people is essential because of the situation occurring in the country.
Military struggle
Since October, the Tatmadaw, which is the military in Myanmar, has lost many soldiers while fighting against a combined attack by three ethnic minority rebel groups. Additionally, pro-democracy fighters who oppose the junta have also joined the battle.
The alliance of ethnic minority armed groups has become stronger in their fight against the Junta. Towards the end of October, they launched a sudden attack in Northern Shan state, seizing more land and gaining control of vital trade routes to China. The military’s inability to retaliate has apparently dampened the spirits of army officers.
This is the most significant challenge the military has encountered since it initially seized power in the former British colony in 1962. Analysts have noted that the Tatmadaw is having difficulty in recruiting new soldiers and has resorted to deploying non-combat personnel to the frontlines.
Laws for the people of Myanmar
Rules says that all men aged 18-35 and women aged 18-27 are required to serve for up to two years, while specialists such as doctors up to the age of 45 must serve for three years, according to state media. The service period can be extended to a maximum of five years during the ongoing state of emergency.
The People’s Military Service Law was drafted by a previous administration in 2010 but was never enacted. Under the terms of the 2010 law, service under military command can be extended up to five years during a state of emergency. Additionally, individuals who disregard military summons can face a potential five-year jail sentence.
The Junta recently ordered a six-month extension of the state of emergency, which was initially announced in 2021 when it seized power in Myanmar.
