More than 90 people are found dead at the northern Mozambican coast after a ferry sank off the north coast of Mozambique, local authorities and the naval forces say.
Nampula province, which is in northern Mozambique where these individuals have taken sail from. The Officials in the area have said that five people had been rescued of the around 130 believed to have been on board, a huge death toll because of drowning.
They were fleeing a cholera outbreak in the province, Nampula Secretary of State Jaime Neto said. Many children were among the dead, he added.
“Because the boat was overcrowded and unsuited to carry passengers it ended up sinking,” Mr Neto said.
Unverified video that was posted on social media platform facebook apparently is showing dozens of bodies lying on a beach, dead.
The boat was apparently travelling from Lunga in Nampula province to Mozambique Island, off the coast of Nampula to avoid the deadly outbreak in the northern province.
Nampula province has been one of the worst affected by the cholera outbreak which has spread over several countries in southern Africa since January 2023.

For nearly 400 years, Mozambique Island was actually the capital of Portuguese East Africa, when the region was under colonial rule by the Portuguese colonists. The island is a Unesco world heritage site for its colonial architecture and rich history as a trading post.
