Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and Congress leader Ashok Chavan has announced his departure from the
Congress party, resigning from his post as MLA of the state. He has chosen to align himself with the Bhartiya
Janata Party (BJP), marking the third significant exit from the Congress party following the departures of Milind Deora and Baba Siddique.
Maharashtra congress is facing crisis
The resignation of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan from the Congress on Monday, following closely on the heels of the departures of two other senior figures, has thrown a wrench into his former party’s
Rajya Sabha plans. It underscores the challenge the party faces in maintaining unity among its top leaders just weeks before a general election.
Chavan is the third significant leader to leave the Congress in Maharashtra, following the departures of former South Mumbai MP Milind Deora and former MLA Baba Siddique.
The future of the Congress in Maharashtra is shaky right now, especially with Lok Sabha elections coming up in April/May and the state also planning to have Assembly elections this year.
Reactions after Chavan quits Congress
Ashok Chavan informed reporters, “I am joining the BJP today at its office in Mumbai. Today marks the start of my new political journey.”
Furthermore, senior Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam stated that Chavan was dissatisfied with the working style of a specific leader within the party.
Commenting on Ashok Chavan’s resignation, newly joined NCP leader Baba Siddique remarked that more individuals are likely to depart from the Congress.
