Vice President Kamala Harris contacted Senator JD Vance of Ohio to congratulate him on his nomination as Donald Trump’s running mate in the 2024 US presidential election on Monday. The 39-year-old apparently didn’t get his call, though.
A Brief But Respectful Talk
Fox News said the next day that Vance had finally spoken following the VP selection on Monday at the RNC. The two had a “brief but respectful” talk, according to the story, which cited a person with knowledge of the circumstances.
Vance Returns Harris’ Call
Following his GOP vice presidential nomination, the vice president contacted Vance. She called the 39-year-old but got no answer, so she left a voicemail. Vance returned Harris’ call on Tuesday afternoon.
First Millennial Vice-Presidential Candidate
Though he was a vice presidential candidate, JD Vance made history on Monday by becoming the first millennial to run for president. On Monday, Day 2 of the RNC, Trump selected Vance as his running mate, capping weeks of rumors about a potential battle among him, Doug Burgum, and Marco Rubio. In a tweet on his social media account, Truth Social, Trump made the revelation first. Following that, his son Donald Trump Jr. showed up to the RNC’s host venue, the Fiserv Forum, to formally make the news.
Trump’s Announcement on Truth Social
“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio,” Trump posted to Truth Social on Monday.
Vance’s Shift in Loyalties
Over the course of Trump’s presidency, Vance, a previous Trump opponent who had even gone so far as to call Trump the “Hitler of America,” shifted his loyalties. He backed Trump in the 2020 presidential contest and so closely matched the 78-year-old’s populist views that, upon his selection as vice president, speculation about his emerging as the movement’s heir emerged.
Vance’s Victory in Ohio
Notably, with Trump’s backing, Vance prevailed in Ohio’s Senate elections in 2022. One of the reasons he picked is because he is close to Donald Trump Jr., the eldest kid.
