The Aam Aadmi Party has decided to give only one Lok sabha seat to Congress in Delhi out of the total 7 constituencies. This has added tension in the seats-sharing talks between the two parties.
Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections 2024, all political parties are busy in seats sharing and other election work. The INDIA alliance is formed by Congress and other state parties against the BJP’s NDA alliance.
In this context, negotiations are going on between the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi. The AAP is currently the ruling party in Delhi and proved a stronghold in the previous elections in Delhi and its majority in the Assembly elections confirm its position in the seat-sharing talks.
Congress’s weak past in Delhi

Earlier, it is reported that the 4:3 seats sharing is proposed by the Congress, which says Congress demands to contest in 4 places and AAP will contest in 3 places. However, M.P. Sandeep Pathak from AAP said that they decided to give 1 constituency to Congress and AAP is going to contest in the remaining 6 places of Delhi by pointing out the position of the Congress party in Delhi. It is noted that the Congress did not win a single constituency in the previous Lok sabha elections and won only 9 seats out of 250 in Delhi Municipal Corporation elections.
Regarding this, Aam Aadmi Party M.P. Sandeep Pathak said that AAP cannot give a seat to the Congress party in Delhi on merit, but is ready to give a single seat to the Congress in Delhi keeping in mind the alliance dharma. So the proposal of 6 for AAP and 1 for Congress in Delhi is proposed.
Congress wish to regain capital
On the other hand, the Congress party is trying to regain its foot hold in the national capital despite suffering a series of electoral defeats. It is noteworthy that in the last 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won all the 7 Lok Sabha constituencies in the national capital Delhi.
Seat sharing and complications
There has already been a difference of opinion between India’s coalition parties on the issue of seats allocation. In particular, the Aam Aadmi Party has announced that it will contest in all the Lok Sabha constituencies in Punjab, where the Congress party has been forced to contest alone.
Apart from these, the Aam Aadmi Party’s demand in states like Goa and Haryana has further complicated the talks between the two parties. The Congress feels that these will dilute its own electoral prospects.
