An 18 years old JEE aspirant ended her life yesterday, 29 January in Kota, the coaching hub in Rajasthan. Report says the girl hanged herself in her home leaving a suicide note.
Teen going through JEE pressure
Dharamveer Singh, Kota’s Deputy Superintendent of police said the teenager was living with her parents in Kota, Rajasthan and preparing for Joint Entrance Exam (JEE). As the exam was scheduled on January 31, the teen reportedly hanged herself on monday.
The suicide note left by her for her parents showed that she was under pressure about the JEE exam and found her self as a loser. Information shared by her family members says that she scored 70 percent in her 12th class but one should get 75 percent marks to be eligible for JEE. So she was repeating her 12th class again. She nearly spent 8-9 hours a day in her preparation for class 12 Rajasthan Board exam and also JEE.
On this tragic day, her family member knocked the door around 10am after noticing that the alarm had been ringing unanswered for a long time. Eventually other family members and neighbors broke the door and found her alive.
Suicide note
A tragic note written by her was also found which mentioned, “Mummy papa, I can’t do JEE so I suicide. I am a loser. Worst daughter. Sorry mummy papa. Yahi last option he”. Shockingly this is the second tragic incident that happened in Kotatha this month and in 2023 it was reported that nearly 30 students killed themselves in Kota.
Government initiatives
In this situation Kota district administration took several steps to help students prepare for exams. A special cell with 11 experts was created by the administration to help the students. As a part of this Dr. Ravindra Goswami, District collector of Kota launched an initiative that he himself spend time with the students in Kota once in every weekend during their dinner and discuss their preparation.
But these efforts seem insufficient while seeing the pressure the students are going through, so the government needs to look up these seriously and take necessary action to take care of the mental health of the students. Parents also need to take the responsibility to monitor their children and support them in their hard times.
