Prime Minister Viktor is critical about EU policy
Hungary has close ties with Russia, Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Prime Minister Viktor Orban has maintained close ties with the Kremlin and been a vocal critic of the EU’s financial and military support for Kyiv.
Ukraine is critically dependent on EU and US funding as it continues to fight occupying Russian forces.
Hungary’s Economy
Hungary’s economy leans significantly on the single market, as nearly all its exports find their way across the border to neighboring countries. According to European Commission data, 78% of Hungary’s exports are attributed to intra-EU trade, with notable percentages going to Germany (28%), and Romania, Slovakia, Austria, and Italy each accounting for 5%. In contrast, 3% of exports go to both the US and the UK.
János Bóka, Hungary’s EU minister, told the FT that his country “does not give in to pressure,” and there is no connection between Ukraine and general access to EU funds. He stated, “Hungary has and will continue to participate constructively in the negotiations.”
