Durga Puja is a Hindu festival that celebrates the goddess Durga’s triumph over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. It symbolizes the victory of good over evil and is a significant festival, especially in Bengal and other parts of India. The festival typically involves elaborate decorations, cultural events, and the worship of Goddess Durga, who is considered a symbol of strength and divine feminine power.
This festival is mainly celebrated in West Bengal, Kolkata, Bihar, Tripura, Assam and Odisha. Durga Puja is celebrate during Navaratri days. Durga Puja started from Shashti Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Karthik as per Bengali Calendar. This year, it is being started from October 20, 2023 and it will conclude on October 24, 2023.
During this festival, people visit various pandals, each pandal is decorated with unique theme. They do Praan Pratishtha of the idol by chanting various Vedic Mantras.Dhunichi Dance is a famous ritual in Durga Puja. They perform this dance on a rhythmix beats of Dhak drums. They carry an earthen pot full of burning cocnut shells and dance. Kumari Puja is also done on the same day in which small girls are worshipped.
Sindoor khela is also an integral part of the Durga Puja festival. Married women visit the pandals and offer vermillion, sweets to Goddess Durga. After completing Durga Puja, devotees take the idol to the nearby river or sea and immerse the idol there on the day of Visarjan.
