Brazil’s president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva alleged Saturday that Israel is committing a genocide against Palestinians, doubling down on the offence level of the previous statements made like comparing Israel’s military in Gaza to the Nazi Holocaust.
Israel has pushed back against genocide claims made at the UN’s top court, stating that its war targets the militant group Hamas, not the Palestinian people. It has held Hamas responsible for civilian deaths, arguing that the group operates from civilian areas. It is true that Hamas operates in civilian areas but, Is it really ethical to attack on the civilian area with no proper evidence of hamas operating out of there?
The Health Ministry in Hamas-ruled Gaza said Saturday that the bodies of 92 Palestinians killed in Israeli bombardments were brought to hospitals over the past 24 hours, raising the overall toll in nearly five months of war to 29,606, but can we really trust sources and figures from a terrorist group?
What exactly did Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva allege?
The Brazilian President said that he won’t be giving up his “dignity for falsehood ”.
The reference to calls for him to retract comments comparing Israel’s war in Gaza against the Hamas to the Nazi Holocaust, in which 6 million Jews and others perished during World War II. These are very serious allegations which cannot simply be taken back and will have a major impact on Brazil’s foreign affairs,
“What the Israeli government is doing is not war, it is genocide,” – he wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Children and women are being murdered.”
Israel’s response to the statements
Israel declared Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva a persona non grata, and summoned Brazil’s ambassador and demanded an apology.
The Brazilian president siding with his statements he won’t be giving up his “dignity for falsehood” recalled the ambassador and cancelled any talks between Brazil and Israel.
Other such allegations and responses
South Africa has filed a case with the International Court of Justice accusing Israel of genocide against Palestinians. The court issued a preliminary order, ordering Israel to prevent death, destruction, and acts of genocide in Gaza. Israel, created as a refuge for Holocaust survivors, has accused South Africa of hypocrisy, comparing Israel’s treatment of Palestinians in Gaza with Black South Africans during apartheid. By comparing does Israel mean that what is is doing in Gaza is oppression?
Consequences of the statements made for India
Brazil is currently in an alliance with India and is currently in BRICS. India is a staunch supporter of Israel and is siding with Israel, will there be tensions between Brazil and India?
If yes, there will be increased tension in BRICS alliance as india also seems to be against China. Brazil made such strong claims as Israel sees no chance of diplomatic revival between the two nations as long as the the current political party is still in power, Moreover these strong statements made will adversely affect the peace as these statements foster hostility between these nation.
