The Supreme Court of India has ordered convicts of Bilkis Bano Rape case to report back to jail in 2 weeks. SC slammed the Gujrat government for passing the remission order of the convict without application of mind. All convicts were released in August 2022 as part of the Gujrat government’s remission policy.
Bilkis Bano case highlights.
On March 3, 2002, Bilkis Bano, who was then 21 years old, was gang raped by a violent mob. Seven members of her family were also brutally murdered by the mob.
In December 2003 Supreme Court directed the CBI inquiry into this case, in 2016 Bombay High court reserved judgment on appeals filed by 11 prisoners who had been sentenced to life imprisonment by this court.
On August 15, 2022, all 11 convicts were released from the Godhra sub-jail as a part Gujrat government’s remission policy. This move taken by Gujrat government created huge controversy and people criticized it.
After the decision, Bilkis Bano moved to SC in November 2023 and challenged the Gujrat government decision, She said that their premature release had disrupted the ethical sensibilities in the society. Following her plea, in March SC notice to the Centre, Gujrat government and others on a plea filled by Bilkis Bano. now on 8th January ordering the convict to report back to jail gives hope to the victim.
Hailing Rape Convicts? Is this the future of India?
The Gujrat government’s decision to release all convicts with serious charges of rape and murder based on the remission policy was a disastrous move. it raises questions about the moral sensibilities of the government and the safety of women in society. All the Eleven convicts raped were greeted with garlands at the Vishwa Hindu Parishad office after their release from the jail.
Earlier BJP MLA from Godhra C.K. Raulji said. “We asked the jailer and learnt that their behavior was good in the prison…also (some of the convicts) are Brahmins. They have good ‘sanskaar’ (values).”
Such comments by a politician from the ruling party and their greeting with garland confirm a degradation in the level of politics and raise questions about their moral sensibilities. Such comments show a sick mentality.
The court order gives some hope
Finally, the Supreme Court’s intervention in the case and its order for the convicts to report back to jail within two weeks give hope to the victim and all citizens of this country who believe in law and order.
Various derogatory things were said against the victims, and some people also connected this matter to religion. But thanks to those people who stayed with Bilkis throughout the procedure and proved that humanity is the only true religion.
The Supreme Court always protects the rights of the deprived, and through its verdicts, it consistently makes people believe in judiciary.
