Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced via his social media page that former Prime Ministers Chaudhry Charan Singh, P.V. Narasimha Rao and Agricultural Scientist M.S. Swaminathan will be conferred with the Bharat Ratna award.
Chaudhry Charan
Chaudhry Charan was one of the prominent leaders of Congress in 19050s. He became MLA in Uttar Pradesh in 1952, 1957, 1962. He was the one who abolished the Zamindari system of ceiling lands from people when he served as a cabinet Minister in the UP Assembly. Then he quitted Congress and became the first non-Congress Chief Minister of UP. Later he entered the national politics in 1977 and became Deputy PM in Moraj Desai government. Later he became Prime Minister in 1979 with the help of Indra Gandhi.
While addressing about the conferment of Bharat Ratna to former PM Chaudhry Charan, PM Modi remembers his contribution for the welfare of the farmer.
P.V. Narasimha Rao
Similarly, former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao to be conferred with Bharat Ratna. Pamulaparti Venkata Narasimha Rao is an important leader of Congress in undivided Andhra Pradesh. He became MLA in 1957 and Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh in 1971 awarded for his contribution to India’s Foreign Policy, language and education sectors. Then he became a Member of Indian Parliament and handled important portfolios like Home Ministry, Defence Ministry and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was the Prime Minister of India during 1991 to 1996. He played a key role in India’s economic reform and globalisation in 1991 along with Manmohan Singh. He also has the credit of one and only South Indian who became Prime Minister.
Prime Minister Modi announced Bharat Ratna for Narasimha Rao and shared that his tenure as Prime Minister ushered in a new era of economic growth. Also, his contributions in the fields of foreign policy, language and education of India are immense. Narasimha Rao was a leader who enriched India’s cultural and intellectual heritage.
Dr. M.S. Swaminathan
Agricultural scientist from Tamil Nadu Dr. M.S. Swaminathan is also conferred with Bharat Ratna. Ms. Swaminathan is an Indian geneticist and International administrator and played an important leading role in India’s Green Revolution which transformed Indian agriculture and also ensured the country’s food security and prosperity.
In this announcement PM Modi shared that Dr. MS Swaminathan was instrumental in helping India achieve agricultural self-sufficiency during challenging times. Also, he made great efforts in modernising Indian agriculture.
Bharat Ratna 2024
Bharat Ratana is a highest civilian award in India and it is noteworthy that there were 5 Bharat Ratna awards announced so far in this year 2024. Earlier, the announcement was made that former Bihar Chief Minister Garbhuri Thakur and former Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani.
