Tenure
Soni became the UPSC chairman on May 16, 2023, and his tenure was set to expire on May 15, 2029, according to the Constitution. Five years ahead of schedule, he has submitted his resignation.

Sources claimed that, although he had adopted the role of Commission chairman, he had been relieved of his duties and did not particularly enjoy it. But, at the time, his plea was turned down. Previous Positions
Soni was the Vice Chancellor of three distinct institutions before being appointed as a member of the UPSC. From April 2005 until April 2008, he served as the Maharaja Sayajirao University’s (MSU) vice chancellor, making him the nation’s youngest vice chancellor in history.
Soni’s resignation coincides with the UPSC filing a criminal complaint against trainee IAS officer Puja Khedkar and her family for allegedly fabricating her identity in order to take the public service commission test more than once.
