After capturing hearts with his portrayal of Sam Manekshaw in ‘Sam Bahadur’, Vicky Kaushal is set to mesmerize audiences again with his next historical drama, ‘Chaava’. Directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Maddock Films in collaboration with Jio Studios, the film sees Kaushal in the role of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the revered Maratha leader. The actor’s commitment to embodying the historic figure was apparent when his look from the set leaked online. The images reveal the actor in authentic Maratha warrior attire, complete with long hair and a full beard, embodying the valor and presence of the 17th-century monarch.
‘Chaava’ is ready for a theatrical release on December 6, 2024 and marks the second collaboration between Kaushal and director Laxman Utekar following their successful venture ‘Zara Hatke Zara Bachke’. The film promises to be a grand historical narrative with Vicky Kaushal as the leading actor, performing the biggest action sequence of his career, as per his own words shared on social media in December last year.
The ensemble cast includes Rashmika Mandanna as Yesubai Bhonsale, Sambhaji’s wife, alongside notable actors like Ashutosh Rana, Akshaye Khanna, Pradeep Singh Rawat, and Divya Dutta.
‘Chaava’ sheds light into the life and reign of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, who succeeded his father Shivaji, the founder of the Maratha Empire. Despite facing immense challenges, including threats from the Mughal Empire under Aurangzeb, Sambhaji’s leadership is noted for its resilience and strategic prowess. The film promises to highlight his contributions and the complexities of his rulership that have often been overshadowed in mainstream historical narratives.
Director Laxman Utekar has expressed his dedication to this project, stating, “We have seen many films on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj but no one knows how great a warrior Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was, or what his contribution was towards the Maratha Empire and Maharashtra.” His commitment is evident in the meticulous planning and execution of the film’s production, which kicked off in October 2023.
The screenplay is based on a Marathi book by Dr. Jaisingrao Pawar, which details the events and achievements of Sambhaji’s reign, focusing on both his political challenges and his courageous stand against the Mughal empire.
