Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, BJP leader JP Natta and Union Minister of State L. Murugan has been elected without opposition in the recently concluded Rajya Sabha elections.
Sonia Gandhi becomes MP without opposition
Sonia Gandhi, MP of Raebareli city, Uttar Pradesh had written a letter to the people of her constituency, in which she said that she will not contest this year’s Lok Sabha elections due to her age concerns.
She also filed for the post of Rajya Sabha MP in Rajasthan. In this situation, she was elected without any opposition to the Rajya Sabha yesterday, 20 February. Sonia Gandhi who has served as a Lok Sabha MP for 6 times now becomes Rajya Sabha MP for the first time.
JP Natta becomes MP without opposition
Similarly, 4 people including BJP National President JP Natta filed nominations for the post of Rajya Sabha MP from the state of Gujarat. Election Officer Rita Mehta announced that all four BJP candidates, including Natta, were elected to the Rajya Sabha without opposition as no one else filed nomination papers to contest for those seats. The four candidates including BJP President JP Natta, Govindbhai Talokia, Jaswantsingh Parmar and Mayank Naik.
Party wise MPs elected unopposed
Totally 37 MP’s are selected to Rajya Sabha out of which BJP bags 19 seats, Congress and Tirinamool Congress gets 4 seats each and YSR Congress gets 3 seats. Congress Chair person Sonia Gandhi, BJP President JP Natta, Union Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaisnav; Union Minister of States, L. Murugan are noticeable leaders who were elected as MP with out opposistion.
Rajya Sabha election
The term of office of 56 members of the Rajya Sabha from 15 states ended recently. Election will be held on 27 February to fill those vacant seats of Rajya Sabha and nominations for this election were completed on 15th February. The last date to withdraw nominations was 20 February. In this situation 41 candidates were selected directly because no other candidates filed nomination against them. The elections for remaining 19 seats is going to be held on 27th February.
