A new bill passed by the South Korea parliament proposes to ban the sale of dog meat by 2027. A new bill was introduced in South Korea to ban the killing and sale of dogs for meat. The bill was passed in the South Korean parliament on 10 January.
South Korea is a country in which eating dog meat has been practiced for centuries. The country’s animal welfare activists are also demanding a ban on eating its meat and the South Korean government has also been consulting it for a long time to put an end to this.
Selling dog meat is illegal
Accordingly, a bill was passed today in the South Korean parliament that would make it illegal to slaughter and sell dogs for meat. The bill was passed in Parliament by a margin of 208-0.
The new bill passed is to ban the breeding, killing and trading it for meat and violation of this law is considered as illegal. The government mentioned that the people who are killing dogs for food face up to three years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million Korean won, which is $23,000. The bill will come into effect as law in three years (2027) and become law.
Mixed reactions of people
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs of South Korea reported that there are about 1,100 dog farms operating for food purposes in South Korea. And about a million dogs are reared on these farms .When it comes to the butcher shop owners, the government has promised to help them to start another business within three years to generate income.
This bill causes huge controversy among the people. Some people felt it is good to save the life of an animal and many felt bad about the tradition and livelihood of butchers.
However, the bill passed which is passed now goes to President Yoon Suk Yeol for final approval. It is to be noted that once the approval is obtained it will become a law.
