Truckers strike
Truck drivers of North India started a three day strike from January 1, 2024 condemning the revised new penal code. This creates a risk of shortage of fuel like petrol and diesel and scarcity of essential commodities in many cities across northern states. People also tended to fill their vehicles with petrol and diesel in panic. As the lorry drivers’ strike has been called off, the shortage has eased.
Revised penal code
During the winter session of Parliament, 3 new Acts namely Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Sakshya and Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha were passed with some amendments in place of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Criminal Procedure Code (CRPC) and Indian Evidence Act (IE) .
These bills were approved by President Draupadi Murmu on 25 December, 2023. Subsequently, those laws came into force. Among the various aspects included in this Act, the Motor Accidents Amendment Act is now becoming the talking point.
According to this law, a person who causes an accident on the roads and does not stop the vehicle will be punished with imprisonment of 10 years and a fine of up to 7 lakh rupees. According to this, if an accident occurs, the vehicle should be stopped immediately and the affected people should be helped. At least the nearest police should be informed.
